about

Idols was the second song I produced for the album. This was actually inspired by a guy we met on a plane home from Hawaii. We became friendly after having a conversation about God while waiting on our flight. Ironically, he ended up sitting next to us on the plane (crazy right?). He prophesied over our family and then we started sharing music. He played me this song from his home country called Satan Be Gone! and I thought that was such a cool title. I ended up finding it when I got back home and sampling it for this record. Shoutout to him!

lyrics

First Verse:

Sometimes forgiveness
comes with bitter sweet goodbyes
men I called my friends
soon would cheer on my demise
anger felt inside
I couldn’t help but empathize
‘cause my blessing ain’t they blessing
and my God ain’t they god(s)
The Spirit kept me high
even when I was at my lowest—
heart was full of gold
even when I was at my poorest
though liquor would impede—
and the weed would supersede
all the wisdom that I carry
like a seed buried deep
ironically, the flesh is made of dirt
And the root of sin is hurt
fostered by a world
we would grow to know as Earth
that darkness overtook
the only light is in a book
that’s full of keys even pastors overlook languages can change—
but the truth will still remain
nothing left to gain
so they question if we’re sane
everything we need we receive
all you gotta do is seek in the kingdom
and a king known as Jesus

Bridge:

Burn your idols
Disregard your titles
Breakup with you ego
Kill your suicidal tendencies to make enemies
Of people who you tend to see as everything you want to be
and scream, "It's only one of me!"

Verse 2:

All my heroes disappointed me
just to reach a status ain’t no point in being auctioned off their souls to the highest bid
Adopted new religions just to follow trends
I moved to LA—
saw the deal and was like, ‘wait a minute’…
this can’t be right *adjust my glasses*
Let me look again.
you mean to tell me—
you don’t feel a little strange?
had to get away
cause like Medusa, get seduced by it—
or you just in the way
bought a ticket home
and spent like 2 more years alone
questioned my decision
couldn’t pay my student loans
couldn’t get a job cause my resume was blank
all I make is classics
unimpressive the banks
Appraised all my masters
Had to leave the question blank
Cause the praise ain’t what I’m after
All I wants a little “thanks”
For the music that I give
Full of stories that I live
Some keys I be dropping
I acquire through the years
hoping that my kids
Don’t go do the things I did
Protect them from their fears,
Disappointment, and their tears
Sins that they’ll commit
Just to keep up with their peers
Show them they’re forgiven—
Just as long as their sincere
Pray that they don’t stray
Compromising for the biz
And remind them that I love them
And so proud of all their gifts
This world will try to taint you
To make you everything you ain’t
But you ain’t…

Verse 3:

Tried to be a Muslim but that wasn’t my tribe
I studied with some Israelites but that just wasn’t a vibe
Grew up in the church where Jesus was the Messiah
But never told us bout His Kingdom
Cause religion is biased
Knew that I was different I grew better with time
But heading in the wrong direction I was losing
My mind
Wisdom I neglected I had set her aside
An inner light I kept from burning like it’s something to hide
Ain’t relate to rappers it was hard to accept
Felt like I was acting wasn’t being myself
Life that I was living had me headed to hell
I couldn’t tell if I was well or just ready to cry
One night I read this book about a King
On a throne who had ruled the universe
But didn’t want to rule alone
Visions of a world
With a culture just like Heaven
Little boys and girls born to rule it all together
Spirits full of God with a bond that never severs
Who were never meant to die and would live that way forever
Ran up on a snake who told them everything they ain’t and they ate
